Everything is Electromagnetism

There are four fundamental forces present in nature. These are gravitational force, electromagnetic force, strong nuclear force, and the weak nuclear force.

Electric force, by definition, is the force between charged particles. Why does the force exist is beyond the scope of these articles.

You could imagine the classical picture of two charged particles. Depending upon the charge of those particles, those particles could either attract or repel each other. And, it is pretty well known that opposite charges attract and same charges repel each other.

Another important force is the magnetic force. It works in a similar manner, which is the repulsion between North-North and South-South poles and attraction between North-South and South-North poles.

It became apparent in the 1800’s, thanks to the final publication by James Clerk Maxwell in 1865, that electric forces and the magnetic forces are two aspects of the same force, and these forces were united under the name electromagnetism. Without going into much details, I can tell you that the reason this was deduced was because of experiments performed by many great minds like Hans Oersted, Michael Faraday and others. In short, they showed that moving charges can create magnetic fields and changing magnetic fields can create moving charges!

Implications

Electromagnetic force is the reason that atoms and molecules exist. The electron cloud is attracted to the nucleus due to the electromagnetic force. Imagine a world without EM force! You won’t be able to because there won’t be a world without it :D! The fundamental particles that make up matter would cease to exist. There would have been no stellar formation after the big bang.

All of Chemistry is a manifestation of electromagnetism. The different essential compounds that exist in nature are due to EM force. And since whole of chemistry is electromagnetism, it is pretty obvious that Biology is indirectly electromagnetism at work. The formation of DNA is guided by electromagnetism (attraction between base pairs causes its formation, to be specific), so is the action of enzyme, our brain, our whole nervous system! Our lives would certainly be impossible without electromagnetism.

Conclusion

We can see that electromagnetic forces are the reason behind our existence. This is the reason why stars exist, planets exist, life forms exist, it is also the reason why I could write this article, and you can read it!
